Last weekend I accepted an invitation for VIP tickets to the British Athletics in Glasgow in the hope that maybe 7 years out of school might have improved my opinion of the sport. My boyfriend and I went along to the impressive Emirates Arena, and after a lovely lunch thanks to Sainsburys we took our seats for the first events.
Over the next few hours we watched British, Scottish (yes they were separate teams!), French and German athletes compete in sprints, relays, long jump, high jump, hurdles and pole vault. We also watched juniors from the many athletics clubs across Scotland take part in events- and wow there were some talented youngsters! Going to this event and seeing the talented athletes (both adults and children) taking part has totally changed my opinion of the sport. I loved watching the athletes take part and found myself cheering along with the crowd. The crowd was amazing in supporting the athletes and there was a great buzz in the arena.
My favourite events turned out to be the running, which is surprising seeing as though when I was at school, running was my all time least favourite sporting endeavor ever. I cannot express how much respect I have for these athletes and the training they must go through to get to this level. It requires a lot of dedication and commitment to be this talented. They've inspired me to try some new sports, so watch this space!
