On the Friday night that I went, Shebeen was buzzing with a lively crowd of diners who going by the friendly chats with the waitresses, had been there before. Shebeen has a rustic and authentic feel to it. It's South African cuisine, and the decor reflected its African roots. We were shown to a booth by the window and set about choosing what to try. Even for a non-beef eater, everything on the menu sounded good. After much deliberation, I settled on Pap en Vleis, which according to the menu is a staple South African dish of lamb chops, tomato and onion sauce and 'pap'. It's kind of hard to describe to you what 'pap' is but it's kind of like mashed potato only not.
My dining companions went for King Prawn Sosatie, Vegetable Samosa and a Shebeen Mixed Grill. We all ate pretty much in silence because the food was so good, only stopping to speak to say how good it was. Even after we had finished our food, we were eyeing off the other dishes that were being taken from the kitchen. We've already all decided to go back and try the Ribs and one of the burgers (they looked HUGE!!!!).
I really enjoyed the atmosphere at Shebeen. The staff were knowledgeable, friendly and welcoming. The food was excellent and I will definitely be going back again.
