You'll be glad to hear that this year's Science Festival caters for all levels of interest, with events for proper science enthusiasts, foodies, fashionistas and children. I've scoured the brochure and picked my Top 5 events that I'll be attending this year.
I never need an excuse to try gin, but at the Science Festival you can taste test a variety all in the name of science. In this event, Scientists and Gin Experts (cool job title alert) will guide enthusiasts through the science behind distilling gin, and then pairing it with some molecular canapes. So sophisticated darling!
Agatha Christie nerd that I am, Poisons looks like it will give me the opportunity to channel my favourite crime writer. Dr Kathryn Harkup will be on hand to guide us through some tales of poisonings, and no doubt psychoanalyze us all to make sure we don't go home and poison our neighbours.
Coffee with a shot of Science
Fellow coffee addicts unite! We finally have an excuse to drink copious amounts of coffee in one sitting in the name of ‘science’. There will be chat about aroma, taste, health and the history behind coffee, but most importantly we can drink coffee- Hurrah!
The Story of the Shackleton Epic
I love tales of explorers and this event will see Tim Jarvis retell his adventure following in the footsteps of Sir Ernest Shackleton's Southern Ocean voyage in 1916. In March 2013, Tim Jarvis lead a team of six men on an extraordinary adventure and his Science Festival appearance is guaranteed to ignite the need for adventure!
LateLab: Beauty by Design
Who would have thought that Science and Fashion would go together? Beauty by Design links the Renaissance art collections of the National Portrait Gallery and Scottish National Gallery to contemporary fashion. Beauty regimes and fashion trends will be discussed, and the event will be hosted by the Programme Director for Fashion at the Edinburgh College of Art.
