When I used to work in a library back home in Australia, I loved Library Lovers Day. All the Librarians would get together a few days before the event, and we would choose books from the shelves that we thought would make a great 'blind date', wrap them in brown paper, stick a heart on them and place them on the shelves to be picked up.
The idea was a bit of a lucky dip for participants, but also helped to encourage people to pick up and read books that perhaps they might not have tried before. On the day, it was exciting to see readers select their book and take them home to unwrap, and even more exciting when people would come back in a few days and say how much they enjoyed their 'blind date'.
It's a shame that this tradition hasn't made its way to the UK, but maybe we could start it? If you know someone in need of a pick me up this Valentine's Day, pick a book for them, wrap it up and give it to them. Better still, do it for a complete stranger and spread the reading love.
